How to Earn Money Online with Keyword Research Part 2
Learning how to earn money online is all about choosing the right keywords, writing some keyword rich content and promoting the hell out of your website (back-links). I’m going to start up where I left off from the last post, which was how to choose the right money making keywords.
To refresh your memory, my strategy is a bit different than the majority of internet marketers as I focus on trying to get organic traffic. I would like to reiterate that I’m a newbie to the IM game and that I have not made money yet. I have spent about 4 months doing research on how to earn money online and about 1 month implementing what I’ve learned and getting some “hands on” experience. Even though I’m a newbie, I’ve noticed that the majority of bloggers and potential Internet Marketers try to drive traffic to their websites through social media and web 2.0 websites. Many people spend countless hours on forums, blogs and sites like Facebook to try and get back-links to their websites. This strategy might work for some, but the majority of the people that do this tactic usually fail as they feel like the time spent on driving traffic to their site does not convert into any Adsense clicks.
Oh, by the way, the strategy that I’m going to layout is targeted towards how to earn money from Adsense. I believe that this is a good strategy to earn money as it teaches the user how to target keywords, promote websites, learn search engine optimization and drive traffic from organic searches. Also, my focus is on earning money from blogging and using WordPress. I like blogging to earn money because it’s easy to get started and I don’t have to worry as much about the technical aspect of websites. This way I can spend more time on creating content and back-links and less time worry about writing html code.
Ok, now that I’ve gone off on a tangent, let’s start looking at keyword research and why choosing the right keyword will make or break you. First off, take your time doing keyword research. This is probably the most important step to earning money online. Think of a keyword as the foundation to making money. Without choosing the right keyword, all of your hard work is going to be in vain. I’m going to try and layout the steps to keyword research so that’s it’s easy to follow so I might have to break up the steps into separate posts. Here are the steps that I follow when looking for a niche keyword.
1. Keyword Brainstorming
2. Build Specific Keywords (Build Long-Tail KW)
3. Keyword Search (Research) Process – Is this money to be made?
4. Keyword Competition
Many people do not have a clue where to start when looking for a keyword. Here’s my rule of thumb, the more you’re interested in a subject, the easier it’s going to be to create content. If you are interested and have knowledge about your subject, you will be able to write content quickly and off the top of your head. If you do not enjoy what you’re writing about, you’re website will be “work” and you might feel like it’s a tedious task. You shouldn’t feel like someone has to pull your arm for you to work on your site! I absolutely enjoy what I’m doing and can write freely about most of my niches (well most of them). If there is nothing you enjoy or have a passion about, then look for a niche that has a lot of content to write about. You can always look at someone else’s work and re-make it into your own (DO NOT COPY THEIR WORK!). Also, the more content there is on a subject, the easier it is on you when it comes to writing posts.
Most people (myself included) cannot come up with a good keyword during the brainstorm process. If you are having problems coming up with a good idea, head over to Ezine or other article directories and see what other people are writing about. Take a look at post titles and write down the keywords that interest you, or that you think have income potential. Don’t do anything else at this point as your goal is to write down as many keywords as possible that you think might have income potential. Ideally, you would want to write about something that you are interested AND can earn you money. However, a lot of times this isn’t the case. So if nothing interests you, then focus on keywords that you think can earn you money.
Next, go through the list of keywords that you have written down and cross off the words that do not have “buying potential”. Specifically, do the keywords that you have chosen have any long tails that answer a question or target a potential buyer to take action? The reason this is important is because if you do not choose a word that does not have buyer potential, there is less of a chance that the person that visits your website is going to click on one of your ads and having visitors click on your Adsense ads is the whole point of driving traffic to your website. Let’s go through a little exercise. Below I have randomly chosen some keywords and will state whether it’s a good keyword for buying potential.
1. Vacuum Cleaners
2. Weight Loss
If you look at the vacuum cleaner keyword, you might think this has a lot of earning potential. The keyword “Vacuum Cleaners” has a huge amount of results in Google so it must be profitable, right? Now think of it from a buyer’s point of view. If I’m going to buy a vacuum cleaner, I’m not going to type in vacuum cleaner into Google. I’m going to search for a specific type of vacuum cleaner or query something that will give me information on how to buy a vacuum cleaner. So a better keyword would be, “how to choose/buy a vacuum cleaner” or “Hoover vacuum cleaners”. The more specific the better, people searching for “Hoover Vacuum Cleaners” are more likely to be in a buying mood than people searching for the plain term “Vacuum Cleaners”. The person has already planned in their mind to search for a specific type of machine. So if they reached your site and didn’t like what they saw on your site and saw an Adsense Ad that showed “Hoover Vacuum Cleaners”, they would be more likely to click on this ad to get additional information.
Remember, this is just an example and I wouldn’t choose this keyword as I know it’s not that profitable, plus the competition is pretty stiff. The next keyword is one that many people try to target because it looks like a profitable niche. Also, many people choose this niche because they have nothing else to write about! Think of the “weight loss” keyword from a buying perspective. If I’m looking for weight loss information on internet, I’m probably looking for information on how to lose weight. Also, I’ll be looking for FREE information so my mind won’t be in a “buying” mode. A better keyword would be “weight loss products” or even better, pick a specific type of weight loss program. The whole point is to look for a keyword that you think a user is going to type into Google to buy a product…not to look for free information. Another point to remember is to determine whether the keyword that you’re talking about is easily attainable. Can the user buy this product online or can they buy this product in Wal-Mart? People will be prone to click on ads that will direct them to a site so that they can purchase a product that they can’t buy in a typical discount store. Would you target a “banana” keyword? No, because bananas are easily attainable in any grocery store. No one buys bananas online (most people anyways).
The best way to lead is by example so I’ve decided to pick a keyword and continue to use this keyword throughout this blog. The reason I’m willing to share this niche keyword with you is because by the time you read this, I will have already ranked high (hopefully) for this keyword, plus this keyword does not pay as much as others. Believe me; I’m not going to share my high-paying niche words with you!
So let’s start with the brainstorming step on my keywords. Here’s how my brain storming process for this keyword came about. I was thinking of niche products that people would buy online and that wasn’t in stores. I’ve been focusing on the health niche lately and started to think about health foods. I thought to myself, “what about the organic products industry?” So what is special about the organic products industry? Well, first off, it’s targeted towards a specific niche and it does have buyer potential…I just need to think of specific organic products to target that can’t be found in most stores…
Once you target some broad keywords, you will need to narrow down your keyword into specific terms…these are called long-tail keywords. For example, let’s use the KW term “cars”. A long-tail is a more specific KW based off the primary word “cars”. So a long-tail variation would be “red cars” or “how to buy a car” or “Cadillac cars” or “car audio”…all of these terms are related to your main “car” keyword.
So picking up with my “organic” niche…I need to find long tail keywords that have buying potential. So how do I come up with a list of long tails for the “organic” keyword? I will tell you in my next post, haha! This post is getting way too lengthy and you’re brain might explode from all this information. Next post – continuation on how to earn money online through keyword research.
